Description
You’re welcome to join us for our next Data Ethics & Society Reading Group on Wednesday 13 May at 12:00-13:00. This time we’re going to read two books, written over 100 years apart that are still as relevant as each other: a century-old piece of speculative fiction and a sharp critique of the AI industry.
The books are:
- The AI Con by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna, which offers a sceptical account of how artificial intelligence is being packaged and sold and asks who really benefits from the hype.
- The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster, a short story published in 1909.
Discussion points
There will be time to talk about whatever we like, relating to the book, but we will share some suggested discussion points nearer the session.
