Description
You’re welcome to join us for our next Data Ethics & Society Reading Group on Wednesday 16 September at 12:00-13:00. This time we’re going to read We Are Not Machines by Sarah O’Connor. The book takes a hard look at how technology is changing the world of work and asks whether, rather than worrying about robots taking our jobs, we should instead be more worried about accidentally becoming robots ourselves.
Discussion points
There will be time to talk about whatever we like, relating to the book, but here are some specific questions to think about while you’re reading.
- The book explores the ways that technologies are changing work in various industries, from translation to social care. Which example resonated with you the most? Did any of the changes surprise you?
- How are you currently using technology in your role? Has the book changed how you think about automation and efficiency at work?
- The author concludes that “The future of work can be more worthy of the human mind, more careful of the human body, more satisfying to the human soul but not without a fight”. Do you agree? What actions would make a more human future possible?
